Dr. Omar Simpson is the Student Success Course Director in the Center for Enhanced Performance (CEP). In this role, he leads the design of the course curriculum and classroom instruction working closely with Plebe Core Course Directors and CEP faculty. Previously, he has served on the faculty and administration at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Simpson’s interdisciplinary research and practice focuses on educational access, college first year experience, student belonging and success, and equity in education, particularly for marginalized groups. He holds multiple degrees including a Ph.D. in Education with a concentration in Culture, Curriculum, and Change from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Simpson specializes in a field that asks educators to rethink and reconceptualize the educational experience. He is trained to explore how identities such as race, class and gender affect the experiences of people in educational contexts in hopes to inform educators and administrators of best practices for overall equitable student success. Dr. Simpson has been recognized for his many efforts in the community specifically with youth mentoring and providing academic opportunities for high school students.
