Dr. Michael A. Butkus, professor of environmental engineering in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, has expertise in water supply, hazardous waste remediation, and wastewater treatment with a focus on sustainable systems in these areas. He is a board-certified environmental engineer (American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists) and registered Professional Engineer (Connecticut). His priority is to promote cadet development with an emphasis on communication, problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking.
His current research interests include mycoremediation of firing range soils, greenhouse gas emissions, sustainable environmental engineering systems, and engineering education. He holds a patent for disinfecting water with UV radiation and silver and for using waste heat to produce drinking water via dehumidification.
