LTC Powell currently serves as the Program Director for Applied Statistics and Data Science Program. LTC Powell was commissioned in 2004 from the United States Military Academy as an Aviation officer. Following flight school at Fort Rucker, Alabama, he joined the 2-227 General Support Aviation Battalion in the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, at Fort Hood, Texas. Over the next five years with the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade (three years at Fort Hood and two years in Iraq), he was a headquarters company executive officer, a UH-60 flight platoon leader, a UH-60 flight company commander, and finally a brigade headquarters company commander. LTC Powell transitioned to Functional Area 49 (Operations Research Systems Analysis) in 2013 while in graduate school en route to the Department of Mathematical Sciences at West Point. He later served as an ORSA in a data scientist role with the US Army Intelligence and Security Command at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. LTC Powell joined the faculty of the Department of Mathematical Sciences again in 2022.
