The Army West Point Men’s Club hockey team traveled to Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York, hoping to avenge last season's SECHL championship game loss. Army took the first game of the series 3-0 but fell 4-3 in overtime versus the Golden Knights on Sept. 27 and 28.
Game one scoring started 10 minutes into the first period when freshman Wolf Woelk scored his first as a member of the team assisted by senior team captain Bobby Staring and junior Luke Dwyer. One minute later, Staring scored the second goal of the game for Army assisted by sophomore Luke Gacek.
In the third period, Army added an insurance goal with four minutes remaining as sophomore Brendan Connor scored with assists by freshman Jackson Dickson and Staring. Freshman goaltender Charlie Zurowski recorded his second consecutive win and his first shutout, stopping over 30 shots throughout the game.
In Sunday’s game, Army jumped out to a 2-0 lead going into the third period. The first of Army’s goals was scored two minutes into the second period by senior Bradley Mackin with assists by Connor and Dickson. Eight minutes later, Woelk scored the second goal of the game assisted by sophomore Mike Fremgen and Staring.
Clarkson tied the game with two quick goals at the beginning of the third period. Then Staring scored off a laser shot assisted by Connor and Dickson giving Army the lead halfway through the period. Clarkson tied it up again and carried that momentum into the 3-on-3 overtime where they scored a minute into play.
