About the Old Grad March Back
There’s nothing quite like seeing hundreds of West Point graduates - some who marched that same route only a few years ago, and others who first tackled it decades before - walking shoulder-to-shoulder with the academy's newest cadets. It’s the Grad March Back: a spirited and symbolic event that celebrates West Point’s unbreakable bond across the generations, famously known as the Long Gray Line.
Every summer, after enduring the intense weeks of Cadet Basic Training - often referred to as “Beast Barracks” - West Point’s newest cadets set off on an approximately 14-mile trek back to the main campus. It’s the final, thrilling chapter of their introduction to military life.
The Old Grad March Back kicks this milestone up a notch by inviting graduates from all eras to join in. Picture a current cadet marching next to a graduate from the Class of 1965, swapping stories under the same steamy August sun. The camaraderie is contagious, and it beautifully illustrates how West Point’s values - Duty, Honor, Country - stand the test of time.

A Tradition Linking Past and Future

In the Beginning
While the march has long been a standard part of concluding Beast Barracks, the formal inclusion of alumni is a relatively recent twist. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, West Point started encouraging graduates to share in this culminating moment. What began as a handful of alumni reconnecting with the academy quickly grew into a celebrated annual gathering.
Today, the Grad March Back is one of the most anticipated summer events at West Point, organized with support from the West Point Association of Graduates.

A Living Legacy
The Long Gray Line isn’t just a phrase - it’s a living, breathing community of Army officers. By walking side-by-side with new cadets, graduates demonstrate that no cadet ever marches alone, whether at West Point or out in the world.
- Mentorship in action: The experience becomes a walking mentorship program. Younger alumni recall their days at “Beast” and share tips on thriving at the academy and beyond, while veteran grads offer career wisdom and stories from their years of service.
- Bridging generations: In a single formation, you might have classes spanning 50 or more years. That shared moment is both personal and universal: each grad remembers what it felt like to face the last mile of Beast Barracks, and each cadet sees what it means to carry on West Point’s proud heritage.
- Celebrating achievement: For the new cadets, making it to the end of Beast is a major accomplishment. Marching back with graduates cheering them on is a powerful reminder that they’re joining a lineage that dates back to the academy’s founding in 1802.

The Journey Continues
Whether you’re a recent graduate eager to relive your “Beast” triumph or a seasoned Old Grad looking to reconnect with the institution that shaped you, Grad March Back offers a unique chance to revisit West Point in its most elemental form: cadets marching in unison, pushing through adversity, and leaning on the grit and unity that defines the academy.
For the public, it’s a moving scene that captures the heart and soul of West Point. It’s one thing to read about the strength of the Long Gray Line; it’s another to witness it in person - or even better, to join in.
