About the Department
The Department of English & World Languages (DEWL) develops cadets’ communicative, cultural, and critical thinking skills through coursework in literature and literary methodologies, along with linguistic, cultural, civilizational, media, and military studies. The department offers three areas of majors - English, World Languages (8 languages), and Foreign Area Studies (6 regions), as well as a Regional Area Studies (6 languages) minor.
Through four essential core courses - one in composition, another in literature, and a two-course sequence in a world language - the department provides every cadet a common foundation in constructing and interpreting meaning through language.
Department graduates are well prepared for 21st-century Army officership and equipped with the cultural, communicative, and intellectual skills necessary for leadership and service to the nation.

Majors
Majors determine course requirements and academic timelines as well as the type of career or branch that a cadet may choose to pursue after USMA graduation.
In addition to the English Division’s major, the World Languages Division offers single or dual language majors in 8 languages - Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. Foreign Area Studies majors focus on 6 separate regions - Africa, East Asia, Eurasia, Europe, Latin America, and Middle East.

Minors
Minors offered by DEWL allow cadets to explore other areas of interest while still pursuing their academic major. These options allow cadets to choose a minor that either complements their major or adds another potential career path after graduation.
Cadets can choose from one of 6 minor tracks: Middle East, East Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe, or Eurasia.

Research
DEWL cadets, faculty, and staff participate in the pursuit of knowledge through USMA’s variety of outstanding research-oriented centers, institutes, and programs. Cadets may take part in capstone projects, offering hands-on experience in designing solutions for real-world challenges.

Internships
The department’s language and cultural immersion experiences include semester-length and short-term opportunities around the world.
DEWL programs include overseas opportunities, including programs such as the Military Immersion and Exchange Program (MIEP), spring immersions, Academic Individual Advanced Development (AIADs), and Military Individual Advanced Development (MIAD). Many are specific to individual language programs, so cadets have options to learn more about their language of study with real-world experiences.
