The Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (MAE) aims to build, educate, and inspire commissioned leaders of character who leverage engineering and professionalism to design and implement innovative solutions to win in complex environments. MAE's vision is to be the model learning community with preeminent undergraduate mechanical and aerospace engineering programs.
Aerospace engineering is crucial for developing and testing prototypes of aircraft and spacecraft. Mechanical engineers can work across a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, robotics, energy, and transportation. They also are involved in many aspects of the aerospace industry, including the design and development of aircraft, spacecraft, and related components.
The Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering provides courses tailored to cadets interested in mechanical and aerospace engineering. Majors determine course requirements and academic timelines as well as the type of career or branch that a cadet may choose to pursue after USMA graduation. MAE majors will prepare cadets for careers shaping technology's future.
MAE cadets, faculty, and staff participate in the pursuit of knowledge through USMA’s variety of outstanding research-oriented centers, institutes, and programs. Cadets may take part in capstone projects, offering hands-on experience in designing solutions for real-world challenges.
The Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering offers international and domestic summer enrichment internships known as Academic Individual Advanced Development (AIAD) programs. These USMA-run academic experiences create excellent opportunities for cadets to practice what they learn in the classroom and use their leadership skills in new and often challenging circumstances.
COL Aaron Hill is a professor at the United States Military Academy (USMA), responsible for teaching, scholarship, and leadership at the academy and department levels. He was commissioned as an Engineer Officer from West Point in 1997, where he majored in Civil Engineering. He has served in various assignments worldwide, including Afghanistan, the Sinai Peninsula, Bosnia, and Croatia.
