Colonel (Retired) Joseph P. Hanus was commissioned as an Engineer Officer from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 1990 after serving six years in the Wisconsin National Guard. He served in Germany as a platoon leader and staff officer in the 130th Engineer Brigade, and then commanded a combat engineer company in the 44th Engineer Battalion. He has also served with the US Army Corps of Engineers as a Deputy District Commander in Galveston, Texas; a project officer for the Task Force Restore Iraqi Oil; and as the Deputy Trans-Atlantic Division Commander Forward in Kuwait during Operation Inherent Resolve.

He has a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has research interests include engineering education, rapid bridge construction, fiber-reinforced-plastic materials, and infrastructure systems. He has taught courses in statics, dynamics, mechanics, structural engineering, construction management, and transportation systems. COL(R) Hanus is licensed professional engineer.
