The Army Men’s Club Ice Hockey team opened its season on Sept. 19 with a dominant 5-1 victory over Marist College in Newburgh, New York.

Army dressed nine freshmen cadets who played their first game for the team. However, Marist scored its first and only goal of the game on a power play with 6:20 left in the first period.

Army quickly responded with an unassisted power play goal from senior Bradley Mackin. Then with 2:41 left in the first period, Army took the lead when sophomore Luke Gacek scored off a rebound, assisted by freshman Harrison Miller and his brother, junior Henry Miller.

Army dominated play in the second period starting with their third goal of the game scored by freshman Jackson Dickson off a rush down the right side, assisted by junior Wyatt Sirimaturos. This was Dickson’s first game and goal for Army Men’s Club Ice Hockey.

Three minutes and 30 seconds later, junior Brendan Connor scored Army’s fourth goal of the game off an assist from Dickson. In the third period, Army added its fifth and final goal off a shot from the point by junior Mike Fremgen, assisted by sophomore Luke Dwyer and freshman Wolf Woelk.

Throughout the game Army’s defense was stifling, led by freshman goaltender Charlie Zurowski, who earned his first win in his first start backstopping the Army team. This was an outstanding start to the season.
