Resnick Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies
Resnick Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies

About the Center
The mission of the Resnick Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies (RCHGS) is to instill within current and future military leaders a sophisticated understanding of the Holocaust and other instances of genocide, and to inspire them to prevent future atrocities in their roles as military leaders. The center provides a critical space for research, teaching, and collaboration in interdisciplinary studies of the past and present.
The center is internationally recognized as the hub of teaching, research, and practice for military education and training about mass atrocity and its prevention. Its unique work ensures that the U.S. Military Academy, the Army, and the Department of Defense are permanently innovating, expanding the toolbox available for detection and prevention, and educating cohorts of officers equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to wrestle with humanity’s worst conflicts.
Partners and Supporters
As the importance of atrocity prevention has grown at national and international levels, so has the demand for the center’s courses, programs, and expertise. West Point cadets show great interest in the center’s flagship courses and the pursuit of research, thesis, and capstone projects in the field. Faculty seek to incorporate RCHGS expert content into existing required courses, in disciplines such as law, social science, geography, systems engineering, math, officership, and more.
Beyond the academy, collaborative research and case study production include requests from organizations, such as the U.S. National Defense University, multiple War Colleges, and the Royal Military College, as well as colleges, universities, and non-governmental organizations from around the world.
Support for the Resnick Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies comes from several sources - all of which allow the center to support the study of genocide and mass atrocity.

“The more I try to come to terms with this hideous history, the more fortified my morals and resolution become. With each memory, my resolve to combat hatred, racism, and injustice strengthens. Furthermore, I have a deeper grasp on the meaning of my responsibility as a future officer.”

Cadet Engagement
RCHGS tasks include enhancing cadet curriculum, developing faculty, advancing scholarship, and solidifying West Point’s reputation as the nation’s preeminent leader development institution. The historically based multidisciplinary courses help promote the center’s other primary curricular task: to assist and encourage faculty to integrate Holocaust- and genocide-related lessons into existing courses.
In addition to creating curriculum and USMA's capstone course for officership, RCHGS has contributed to courses at the Air Force and Navy academies. The Reserve Officer Training Corps uses its Ordinary Soldiers case study for the required education of officers nationwide.
West Point cadets and faculty also benefit from RCHGS support of research and travel opportunities and internships offered through the Department of History & War Studies.

Outreach and Impact
RCHGS represents a unique opportunity to enrich the cadet experience while strengthening the moral fibers of the U.S. military overall. The center has rapidly evolved into an information hub, linking all branches of the military and its service academies to civilian academic institutions and non-governmental organizations. As no other service academy has a similar mechanism, the Resnick Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies is distinct and vital.
While cadets are a priority for the RCHGS, its work extends to the military community and global scholarly communities. It facilitates an annual Mass Atrocity Education Workshop in cooperation with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and supports robust lectures, panels, conferences, and art and film exhibitions. These events attract prominent scholars, policymakers, genocide survivors, artists, and even perpetrators to share experiences, insights, new perspectives, and warnings.
RCHGS thrives on the generous contributions of others. If you’re interested in contributing to its success, please contact the West Point Association of Graduates.

Support Us
While the academy's core academic, military, and physical development programs receive federal support, many projects and activities that are of great value but outside the "core" designation receive minimal to zero funding from the government. The Superintendent has prioritized the Resnick Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, which falls in the latter category, as an academy need and a means of providing a distinct and vital contribution to our nation. Creating this capacity requires private support, and thus the RCHGS is part of West Point’s current “For Us All” capital campaign.
