MAJ Theodore Thomas is an assistant professor with the Department of Physics and Nuclear Engineering at the United States Military Academy. He served as an enlisted soldier and Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) for more than 10 years in the Army as an X-ray technologist and combat medic.
He served in multiple duty stations and positions before receiving a direct commission as a 72A, Nuclear Medical Science Officer. As a 72A, MAJ Thomas has served in the Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center as the Assistant Chief of Radiation Safety, the William Beaumont Army Medical Center as the Chief Radiation Safety Officer, and the 20th CBRNE Command as the Command Radiation Safety Officer and Force Health Protection Officer.
After his time with the 20th CBRNE, MAJ Thomas was selected to be part of the Purdue Military Research Institute. He went to Purdue University, where he earned his Ph.D., researching integrated safety and security risk analysis methods for research reactors. Throughout his military career, MAJ Thomas earned other academic degrees (1 M.S., 2 B.S., and an A.A.). He has also been trained in various medical and nuclear response measures, including radiological emergency management, hazard operator training, medical effects of ionizing radiation, and more.
MAJ Thomas is a member of the Health Physics Society. Outside of researching, teaching, learning, and the Army, he is an enthusiastic nerd who enjoys video games, tabletop games, reading, writing, and general nerd culture. More importantly, he is a father and a husband who loves his family and strives to provide the best for them.
