West Point is transforming to ensure its graduates are ready to fight and win our nation's wars, whenever and wherever they are called upon to do so.
As the battlefield rapidly evolves, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point is continuously examining the Academic Program to ensure it intellectually prepares graduates to lead now and through the next evolution of warfare.
After the first phase of a comprehensive review, the Academy leadership launched West Point's first academic program reorganization since 1989. The reorganization will implement changes both major and minor across the Academy's academic disciplines and departments.

The academy is proud to establish the Department of English & World Languages (DEWL). How we communicate - in any language and across any culture - significantly impacts strategic relationships and the military’s ability to fight and win the nation’s wars. The alignment of experts in literature, culture, and language acquisition will ensure graduates can communicate precisely and effectively in support of U.S. interests around the globe.
As new technologies and domains of warfare are pushing the laws of armed conflict to their limits, the Academy has established the Department of Law & Philosophy. Aligning law and philosophy will prepare graduates to remain true to the Constitution, the law, and their ethical obligations when faced with unanticipated challenges.
The newly established Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering combined the new Aerospace Engineering major with Mechanical Engineering. Integrating the new Aerospace Engineering program will provide cadets with innovative knowledge in aeronautical and astronautical engineering as they prepare for future warfare in a rapidly evolving world. The department will offer more integrated design and research opportunities to equip leaders with a deeper understanding of complex, multi-domain systems on the ground and in the air.
The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering will focus on equipping graduates to lead in a variety of roles, from designing resilient infrastructure to creatively overcoming challenges affecting human health and military readiness.
The Department of Geography & Earth Sciences will continue to integrate its disciplines to prepare graduates for the ever-important skills of thinking globally and geospatially, applying that understanding to develop effective solutions for the Army and Nation.
The Department of History & War Studies, formerly the Department of History, integrated the new War Studies major into the longstanding history department to blend centuries-deep scholarship with a cutting-edge curriculum so graduates can out-think and out-maneuver any adversary. The department will develop leaders who understand both history and the past, present, and future of war, strategy, and warfare.
To meet the Army’s scientific and technical demands for future warfighting, the Academy established the Department of Chemical & Biological Science & Engineering (CBSE). Integrating its new biology major and bioengineering minor will enable the department to expand its focus on biotechnology, chemical defense, and medical readiness.
West Point is proud to announce the evolution of the Semester Abroad Program into the Military Immersion and Exchange Program. Starting in the Spring of 2026, all cadets studying abroad will do so at military institutions, where they will learn and train alongside future coalition partners. Building on our already robust foundation of military exchanges, this shift deepens warfighting readiness and prepares graduates to lead, fight, and win as officers in the world’s most lethal fighting force.
“West Point will continuously adapt to ensure our graduates can design and implement solutions to complex problems on the modern battlefield.”
Departments are cadet-focused - committed to developing leaders of character both in and out of the classroom.
